A Better Plank

A plank (also called a hover or bridge) is an isometric core strength exercise that involves maintaining a position similar to a push-up for the maximum possible time.

Dave Parise has a lot of good advice. This is one of my favorites. Shorten your plank with the help of a foam roller. It still targets your core and avoids that pain in your back.
